Waterproofing
When should you waterproof your terrace? Before the rains
On the coast it hardly ever rains, until it suddenly pours. The autumn storms are what expose terraces that are not properly waterproofed. Here we explain how to tell whether yours needs it and why it is better to do it before the water arrives.

Why autumn is the real test
For months, the sun and the heat take their toll on the terrace: joints open up, the material dries out and small cracks appear. Nothing shows because it does not rain.
With the first heavy storms, the water finds those weak points and gets in. Often the problem is discovered on the ceiling of the flat below, when there is already a stain or a drip.
Signs your terrace needs waterproofing
- Stains on the ceiling below the terrace, especially if they grow after it rains.
- Cracks in the floor or the surface covering of the terrace.
- Open joints, tiles that sound hollow or that move.
- Puddles that take a long time to dry after rain.
- Previous waterproofing that has lifted, cracked or come unstuck.
If you see any of these signs, it is best to have it checked before the rainy season.
Why it is better not to wait for the leak
Once the water has got in, the repair is twofold: the terrace has to be waterproofed and, on top of that, the damaged ceiling below has to be made good and painted. If the damp has been there for a while, there may be deteriorated paint or mould.
Waterproofing in time is simpler and stops the problem reaching the inside of the home. We explain the stains a leak leaves in damp stains on walls and ceilings.
It needs dry weather to be done properly
To waterproof, the surface has to be clean and dry, and the product needs its time to cure without getting wet. That is why it is better done in dry weather, before the storms begin, than in a rush when it is already raining.
Waterproof paint or liquid rubber?
It depends on the terrace: whether it is walked on or not, its condition and what is underneath it. We explain the differences in waterproof paint or liquid rubber. During the visit we tell you what suits your case.
